ENGLISH TEACHING THROUGH DRAMA 💃

Drama is an effective way of language teaching, especially among young learners. Students actively participate in the lesson by using many different techniques such as improvisation and role-playing, and they learn by having fun. Drama is also an effective method to reduce stress in students. Here is the lesson plan where we deal with the subject of seasons&weather through drama:

Activity: Let’s learn the seasons and weather. (Haydi mevsimleri ve hava durumlarını öğrenelim.)

Subject: Seasons and weather (Mevsimler ve hava durumu)

Learnings:

1. Listening – Students will be able to learn how to differentiate the seasons and weather.

2. Speaking – Students will repeat the words they are supposed to learn, and they will talk about them.

Grade Level: 3. grade

Number of Students: 20

Duration: 30 mins

Techniques: Picture Frame, Thought Tracking, Improvisation, Sculpture-Sculptor

Materials: Colored cardboards, A4 papers, scarves, umbrellas, jackets, sunglasses, sticks, sticks, pictures

PROCESSING STEPS

Pre-Activity: The teacher enters the classroom and greets the students. He then gives a small talk to the students about the subject.

Warm-up: The teacher shows pictures that represent the seasons and weather conditions that he has prepared in advance. Then, he shows the pictures one by one and asks them to repeat the words with their Turkish equivalents in the text below (spring, summer, autumn, winter, windy, sunny, snowy, rainy, hail, foggy).

The teacher then hands out sticks to the students with pictures of different seasons and weather on them. The teacher says one of the above words in English and raises the stick in the hand of whoever has the picture that corresponds to that word. The teacher continues the activity until he is sure that everyone is lifting the stick in their hands.

Processing

1. Step

Photo Square Technique

The teacher randomly adheres the pastes he has prepared in advance and containing the four seasons to the hands of the students in the class. He then goes to each corner of the class and says the name of the season in English. The student, who has a sticker from that season in his hand, goes to his corner to unite with his group mates.

Students whose groups are formed are given one minute and asked to create a photo frame plan during this time. Each student determines their place and role in the photo frame. Then, one by one, the teacher calls the groups to the stage to demonstrate their plans by saying the names of the seasons in English. Groups create the photo frame. After this step, the teacher uses the thought tracking method and touches the shoulders of the students and asks them to tell them what the weather is like in the season in English (for example, It's windy). Once this step is complete, students take their places to prepare for the next event.

2. Step

Improvisation Technique
In this step, the improvisation technique is used. The teacher asks the students to draw lots from a bag with the names of the weather conditions written in it. After the drawing of lots, students who are also attracted to the same weather are asked to form a group. After the groups are formed, they are asked to improvise their weather in class differently from each other. After each group improvises, the teacher turns to the classroom and asks, "What's the weather like." The students reply, "It's windy/sunny/rainy/snowy/hail/foggy." At the end of each improvisation, these answers are repeated and engraved in the studentsmemories.

3. Step

Sculpture - Sculptor Technique

Finally, in this technique, the teacher creates groups of two students. In doing so, he randomly distributes the cards in his hand that match each other and have pictures of weather conditions. He then asks students to find the matching of the pictures and team up with the person they find. Students decide who will be a sculptor and who will be a sculptor.

After the roles are distributed, the students are given one minute to think, and at the end of the time, the students are taken to the stage in turn. Students try to explain the weather conditions on the cards in their hands to their friends by using the scarf, umbrella, sunglasses, and hat on the teacher's table. After the sculpture is completed, the teacher asks "What's the weather like?" again, allowing the students to repeat it.

4. Step

Evaluation

In the final step, the teacher hands out worksheets at the end of the lesson to the students to fill in the blanks and match the pictures to practice and reinforce the topic. Then he ends the lesson by checking the answers and retelling the parts that are not understood.
